1965 Olds 425 V8 Hotrod Magazine November 1964

The Large switch is WW2 Warbird Magneto Master Switch.
The Real Deal.
From A Corsair I do Believe.

How is the paint holding up on your exhaust manifolds?
Tell more about this engine. Is the long block stock or rebuilt?
Have you had the heads off? I know you changed the rocker studs
and rockers and intake. And added the magneto. What else?

The Long Block is 100% stock.
All 1965 original .
.015 " thick Shim Headgaskets factory Olds GM Intact.
Quench is about .030" or so from the factory .

The VHT Paint is holding up.
Got lighter in color.
Not show quality .
Building to be a Driver.
Have Fun when I want to.

I am going to Install new Valvestem seals on my Olds 425 A engine next.
It smokes lighty on engine startup and is gone a few seconds later.
I noted with valvecovers off they were not there.
Last owner had the oil pan off to reseal it.
He did mention that he cleaned it out throughout .
They are High Temp nylon valvestem seals used Intake & Exhaust.

I have Viton seals but Heads must be pulled to machine for them.
Valves removed.

I am using New NOS Fel Pro Valves seals .
OEM stock replacement .

Since the Olds 425 engine has 3/8" screw in Rocker Am studs I can use my Racing MOROSO On the Head Valvespring Compressor.

I would like to install new valvesprings while I go back in to change out and install new valvestem seals.
These Olds 425 engines take unusual spec springs.
I think I have a Vintage set of Iskenderien springs that may work.
Check today after work 12 pm.

I have modern ISKY New valvespring set meant for the One off 1965 425 45 Degree cam bank angle Camshaft Ron Iskenderien ground for me himself.
The Heads must be pulled to machine cut the Valvespring seats.

If you are not going to pull the heads right now and just change the valve springs
and seals, you might want to check out Alex's Parts. http://www.alexsparts.com/
He has parts in sizes you can't find anywhere else. His parts saved my 334 SBC.
I machined my guides for .562" seals, but after cutting they actually measured .558".
Alex has .558" diameter seals. He also has "ghetto ground" retainers for more piston
to valve clearance - his are machined. This option can be added to any of his retainers
for $17.00. He also has + and - valve locks, not just .050" either way.

I will check out your Link Mike.
Alex Parts.
It appears 1964-79 Oldsmobile V8 Valvesprings factory installed are the same starting with the 1964 Olds 330 Ci V8.
The Isky Valvesprings I was thinking of won't work on my Olds 425.
I actually found 3 brand new sets of Isky 6005 valvespring sets.
For my 1970-1/2 T/A RAIV. That engine uses modern Long Valvestem lengths.
Its easy to fit 1.800-1.900" tall valvesprings on it.

Olds 425 valvesprings are set at 1.670" install height according to my 1965 OLDS GM Factory Service Manual.
Not much seat pressure used New.
76-84 pounds only on the seat.
I am comfortable using 95-100-110 seat pressure .
Don't want to exceed 250-275 pound open pressure .

Summit has Sealed Power VS-721 springs with right factory specs.
Just $1.75 each.
Made for Olds V8 & ancient Lincoln 430-462 Ci V8.

Howard Cams has springs that come close.
Still checking them out.
I am doing all the Race Valvespring math on paper.

I found a NEW Set of Crower Race valvesprings I put away.
Made for Vintage Pontiac V8 400-455 Cast Iron D-port Ram Air Series & HO GTO Engines 1960's - '70.
I checked with My RIMAC Valvespring tester.
Obtained 100 pounds exact at 1.670".
1.430 Spring OD.
I have ISKY Standard height Chromemoly retainers & Super Locks.
Also have special Crower +.150" Chromemoly retainers made just for Pontiac V8. D-port.
Matching Crower Billet Valve. Locks.

I have a MOROSO On the head car valvespring tester.
I will check and see what I have on the Olds 425.

Also have my Valvespring height micrometer. Check on the head car exact.

I just spent a couple of hours looking around Alex's site. He has kits already put together
that eliminate most of the guesswork trying to piece together all the individual parts.
Good prices also. And I have no problem with the quality.
Measure what your installed height is and then check Alex's.
I know you know what you're doing. Mike.

If your planning on a larger camshaft later, you might want to think ahead - you might
want to use his extra clearance retainer-to-seal retainers, so you don't have to set
everything up again. I know what a P.I.T.A. it can be.

Also check Manley springs, unless you don't like that brand. They have a spring that I
could have used instead of the ISKY 235D for less than half of ISKY's price.

I will look in next hour Mike.
Doing Tech here .
Areas of my speciality for Grumpy & Guys.

Cold outside .
Temps dropping to 25F.
Adjusting the Electric Hot Choke coil on the Holley Street Avenger 770cfm.
Cold start it and let it warm up.

$ Is tight for a few weeks.
My bud Crazy Ed has Ford Mustang Race work lined up.
Building Ford 8.8 rear diffs for me.
I do.it better than all in Chicago.
Just have to wait for end off April.

Getting ready to upload todays pictures.
Checking Out Alex's parts website.....pretty nice Mike.
Prices are not too Bad.

Going to check out Howard Cams More for valvetrain parts - springs & retainers....Howards now listed on Summit Racing.
They have Titanium Retainers & valvespring packages that can not be beat for the $.
My experience is Titanium Retainers are 100 % safe on the street Full RPM for at least 10,000 miles.

I actually bought my Viton Valve stem seals from Alex Parts Mike.....He is on Ebay.
Bought different sizes a few years back...stocked up. I like having parts on hand.
.500" & .530 " Valve guide OD for 11/32" valves, Pontiac V8, Olds V8, & SBC.
.500" typical on SBC aftermarket aluminum heads.
.530" is for Factory Pontiac V8 Ram Air Series 1967-68- 1970 ....They used Positive Valve stem seals only on these engines Intake & Exhaust & 1973-74 SD-455 TA & Formula Engine.

Alex makes & Sells Viton Valve stem Umbrella style Like Oldsmobile V8 used & all Vintage Ford V8 engines.
No machining required with the Heads On the engine.
The umbrella valve stem seals actually work very nice controlling excess oil to the valve guides.
A tight running engine like my Olds 425 will consume just 1/2 - 1 quart oil every 3,000 + miles driving my experience.
Problem is they never last more than 5-10 years in a running engine.
Viton should last 20-50 years time.

I think I will purchase a set of Alex Viton Umbrella valvestem seals soon.
Price is just right $.

I am still checking out Alex Parts Website........Its a very Good Source of Mid Level grade parts.
I KNOW 99.999 % OF THE GUYS OUT THERE ARE FICKEN BROKE RIGHT NOW DUE TO THAT DAMN FICKER MUSLUM BAM BAM POTUS
PIECE OF CHIT JACKOFF.

I am going outside again today and working on my 1963 Grand Prix.
Also have the Wifee's car to work on.
It is supposed to hit 63 F today.
Calling for Rain and Colder weather again all week.
Make best use of Time and decent sunny days.
Typical Spring Rainy weather.
I will try and check on the head seat load with my Moroso valvespring tester.
Check True Valve spring installed heights factory built.
See what I can come up with the new Crower and Isky parts I have.
I will install my Valvespring Seals I have on hand today.
The NOS Fel Pro High Temp Nylon seals made just for 1959 & Up Olds V8 engines.
Last item to take care of & then ready for a Test Drive down the Road.

I can always go back in later to make upgrade changes.
The 1963 GP & Olds 425 is super easy to work on.
Both Valvecovers removed and all Rockers in just 5 minutes time.
I have my Cordless Milwaukee M12 Lithium Ion Battery 3/8" Ratchet.
NICE...Like my Snap On Air Ratchet at work but better. No Air compressor required .

May have a Nice set of New Titanium retainers for the Olds 425.
7 Degrees. Fit Valvesprings I have and factory Olds V8.
Not china but made in the USA.
Good price.
