1965 Olds 425 V8 Hotrod Magazine November 1964

I am not sure what the Factory cam specs are Grumpy.
Best I could find is its approximately 214-218 degrees @ .050" lobe lifts.
About .400" lift at the valvestem with factory Olds 1.6:1 rockers.

The Rain did not Wash away the 1963 Positraction marks in the Highway Grumpy.
I just brought the trash can back to the house. Took A look....LOL.
425 ci V8 responsible . !

There is no Factory drain plug.
So I will have to draw suck the oil out.
Do what I did. Drill and tap a hole at the very bottom of the case for a 1/8-27 taper pipe plug.
It will not weaken the casting and for future gear oil changes, you just pull the plug when
you come home from work while the gear oil is warm. Then go take a crap and have a beer.
It does not take that long to drain.

I have an old Motors manual covering those years. I'll take a look.

To add a Drain plug I would Weld in a Bung Fitting right at 6'Oclock on the Steel 9.3 main Banjo Housing.

I don't want to drill into into the 9.3 Hogs Head drop out 3rd Member.

Sucking out the Gear Oil is a Good option for now.

I may change Gears later this year.
Lots of Torque. I could actually gear taller.
But Drag Racing is in 2016... takes lower gears.
I want to drive my 1963 Grand Prix daily as much as I can.
Finish Tuning the 425 with the Factory 3.23 Posi Rear.

The Average cruising speed on I-80 is now 90-100mph.
Illinois is Bankrupt Broke.
.....Democrats & Bams Fault.
5'0 doing nothing ....getting laid off.

Apparently, these engines had 9.5, 10.25 & 10.5 compression ratios - all use the same camshaft.

All generation-2 small-block Olds V8s used a stroke of 3.385;" however, the big-block used either a 3.985" (1965-1967) or a 4.25" stroke (1968- 1977).

Generation 2 engines, while being a wedge-head design, had a unique combustion chamber that resulted from a valve angle of only 6 degrees. This was much flatter than the 23 degree head of the small-block Chevrolet and 20 degree head of the Ford small-block wedge. This very open and flat chamber was fuel efficient and had lower than average emissions output. It was the only GM engine to meet US emission standards using a carburetor - all the way up to 1990, when it was finally retired.

All Oldsmobile engines used hydraulic lifters, including the high performance versions.

Starfire Was The Top Dog for 1965 Olds.
They had higher rate or taller valvesprings.
Drill spot on the Front China Wall to identity .
No other way to identity external other than the long serial engine production number.
As far as I know old paper records are long gone.
Been about 40-45 years since the Olds 425 was Raced by a large Group.
Most Were T-bucket Guys like Rick in Late 1960's & 1970's.
I have read that the Olds 425 Starfire or Jetstar actually beat the Legendary 1965 Pontiac 2 + 2 Catalina 376 HP 421ci Tripower 4-speed....Famed 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds.
It was at a Professional Race competition .
I think a Mobil Oil sponsored Race.

It looks Like I have 387484 GM camshaft Mike.
52 degrees Overlap.

Joe Mondello passed on back in 2008.
A new guy is running .
Bad rap online....Olds guys dislike.
I worked on a 330 ci V8 Olds F-85 442 clone convertible .
It was an on the Day job project back in 2012. About this time of year.
The guy purchased a Mondello Kit complete to rebuild the Little 330 Rocket.
New Modello guy supplied China Lifters like sold to You Mike....Flat camshaft in 2 days....Wiped out all Cam Lobes.
The Engine was dropped off Longblock complete minus Intake & Carb.
I had to install into the F-85.
Transfer all.
Competition Cams Break in oil supplied.
I used.
Broke in the Camshaft & engine carefully .
Alll well for 2 days almost...
Started missing bad.
Popping back through intake carb.
Die out.
Compression test & valvecovers removed revealed flat cam lobes.
Engine had to rebuilt again.
USA lifters used.
I reinstalled & put back together .
Ran good & lasted.

Not a Super Torque monster a 330 Olds...Runs like a 383 sbc Mild Cam.
425 ci Olds way more Real world street torque.

About 25 years ago, my friend Chuck had a 1970 Olds Cutlass with a 350 Rocket.
The engine had 168,000 miles on it - and NO WEAR in the cylinders. Machine shops
love to bore cylinders, that's how they make money. It blew me away when the owner
looked at the bores and said he would just hone them. We rebuilt it with TRW forged
pistons and an Edelbrock Performer camshaft and intake. What a nice running engine.
He was doing pretty good with the bodywork on the car, but he joined a dating site, got
a girlfriend that became his wife, started making babies, and got rid of everything.
What a waste.

Dick Miller Builds A 620hp, 432ci Oldsmobile That Runs On Ordinary Pump Gas.

Oldsmobile used High Nickle content Blocks.
Cadillac did too.
They both have strange casting logos...

CFE.....My 427 Tall deck BBC Thread I have here on Grumpys site with lots of photos has the Same CFE casting logo.
The GM foundry lines are a Mystery to me.
All BBC were made at St. Catherines Niagra Falls New York.
Cadillac & Olds V8 made there also ?

More $ in that Nice Olds V8 than I have current Mike.
I like Olds V8 because its Poor Man's Cheap torque Fun !

I have The Delta 98 4-bbl engine Mike.
Just saw your question rereading.
No Drill Spot As Starfire 425.
Mine has "N" engine code on Passenger cylinder head as Starfire used "N" Also.
