1965 Olds 425 V8 Hotrod Magazine November 1964

I took the '63 Grand Prix for a ride down the Road Highway this morning.
The 1965 Olds 425 A Engine Runs Beautiful .
Smooth, Powerful , & Mega Torque a Blip of the Gas Pedal away.
More Power to be had with Fine Tuning and minor Jet changes on the Seconday side of The Holley 770 Street Avenger.
Its pretty good on Fuel Economy too.
I drove about 10 miles.
No issues.
Good Oil pressure at 40 psi Hot Cruising .
Took her up to 90 mph.
Went from 40 mph to 80 mph several times accelerating part throttle and then off the gas .
That Reseated the Piston Rings 100%.
No Oil burning smoke.
No oil leaks.
425 is Really willing to Rev Up.

Its super windy out today.
40 mph winds steady & peak wind gusts up to 50-55mph at my Farmhouse.
But its Sunny & Warm at 65 F.

I chose to leave the Valvecovers on today.
Do the Valvestem seal replacement gor another day.
I am thinking OEM Stock Replacement Valvesprings are the best choice for Now. Sealed Power VS-721 Spring set.
$32 only Summit Racing.
Install Titanium retainers too.
I love Ti Metal.....
RACE.

I added 1-1/2 quarts of MMO Marvel Mystery oil to the Engine crankcase.
Started and let the Olds 425 idle for 30 minutes .
Drained the Oil & installed a New Fresh K&N HP2003 Race oil Filter.
I put back in 5-quarts of CASTROL GTX EDGE High Mileage 10w30 Synthetic Oil.
Also added 8-ounces of GM EOS Engine Oil Supplement with the Good stuff ZINC.
Restarted and now I have 50 psi Oil Pressure cold & 44 psi hot oil pressure at 2,600 RPM's.

THE MMO REMOVED LOTS OF OLD CRAP SLUDGE HID INSIDE OF THE OIL GALLERIES .
MMO REALLY WORKS GREAT.
AWESOME STUFF.

RUNNING STRONG & A CLEAN ENGINE INSIDE.

I Did Burnout in front of my Farmouse.
Just stomped on Gas WOT.
LEFT TWIN STRIP POSI MARKS FOR 150 FEET.
Boiled The Highway Blacktop.

Changining the Turbo 400 Trans Fluid & Filter Now.

Next Weekend I will change out The Pontiac 9.3 Rear Diff Gear oil.
Royal Purple 75-90w in it.
Last changed out in 2004 by me.

yes the additives in the the quart of MMO you can add to your crank case oil, do a good job of breaking up and holding in suspension oil sludge and transporting it to the oil filter

I Love MMO !!!
GREAT STUFF YES GRUMPY.
There was a pile of Dodo crap under the
Factory intake.
I cleaned spotless.
Didn't want to photograph.
All Great now.
Its definitely all 1965 built other than my Work & Mods.

The Other Light Silver Blue Flexplate is off a 1966 Pontiac 389 4-bbl from a 1966 Bonneville Convertible Grumpy.

Works really good on soft ground & grass dirt....Old V8 Flexplates for Jackstand bases when Concrete floors are not available.
Learned from my Dirt Track Racing Days.

;)

A Turbo 400 Transmission is Impossible to install into a 1963 Grand Prix.
You must cut apart the Floor Pan they say Grumpy & build new like a drag race car.

You can see I did it on my own in 1998 at 28 years old.
No internet. No experts.
I made Her fit.
Works Great.
Even at 140 + MPH she is stable smooth the 1963 Grand Prix.

the great pictures help explain the project progress

I worked on the Wifee's '99 Honda CRV Last night. Installed 4 new stabilizer end links on all 4-corners.
Aterwards I took my '63 GP for a ride again down the Highway Road.
The more I drive the Better the '65 Olds 425 A engine runs.
Just tap the gas pedal and I am cruising 70-80 mph. Just off the Idle circuit of the Holley 770 Avenger carb.
Starts up immediately always cold or hot.
Tonight I fixed the Turn signals.
Found a NOS GM Turn signal switch on Ebay a few weeks back.
Not reproduced. Rare find and I needed.
Installed and I have working turn signals again.
Also wiped down the Dash & Chrome inside. Shining again .

Its really a Great Engine The Olds 425.
Amazing what Olds Engineers built 51 years ago.
And my 425 A is a Survivor.

Makes run of the Mill LS power today look like a POS.
ITS THAT GOOD OF AN ENGINE THE 425 OLDS V8 .

I ordered 3 quarts of Royal Purple Synthetic Gear Oil. 75-140w.
The '63 Pontiac 9.3 holds 5 pints of gear oil.
Choosing a thicker gear oil than standard 75-90w for High Speed driving on the Highway. Want the added protection thicker viscosity provides typical in Hot 90-100 F summer time heat.
Made a List of small items needed.
Its going to take a few weeks of paychecks to obtain all.
This weekend I will change out the 9.3 rear diff gear oil.
There is no Factory drain plug.
So I will have to draw suck the oil out.

The 425 has so much Torque off idle the Grand Prix at 4200 lbs with me in it drives like a Light Weight C4 Fiberglass bodied Corvette.
More Torque on Tap than the TPI 350 of Course.

yeah! the larger displacement higher compression engines can produce rather instant responsive torque,
the days of cars easily smoking the tires with a mere blip on the throttle were long gone by the 1980s,
now to most people who are younger than 50 or so they have never had the opportunity,
to feel what a high compression and larger displacement engine feels like!
Ive built enough muscle car engines and seen the amazed response in the face of the guys when they get that first experience driving a high torque big block, they have never before had a car that can destroy the tires by simply too rapidly applying the right foot on the throttle at speeds under 20 mph!
think about that they basically stopped making the true muscle car engines in the early 1970s
its now 2016, that was 46 years ago, so if you got your drivers license at age 16-18 like most of us did, those cars were already 10-20 years old,
when you got your license and few were still being used as daily drivers simply because the fuel they used was hard to find and most younger people are not driving a 10-30 year old car
