Let's start over

It seems, if it wasn't for bad luck, you would have no luck at all.

Hope it turns around for you soon!

Bearings are here... in time for the weekend. Weather might not be...

I wish you were local! Id sure like to help!
its a P.I.T.A. and frustrating at times knowing you could be useful and not being able to help
and my shop with a lift and smooth concrete floor , good lighting out of the rain, would more than likely make the process a bit easier than cobble stones and a drive way on jack stands

Thanks Grump. Be glad to work on any project of yours!

So. Engine out. Pulled all cap, rods included.

Minimal damage on crank. Very minimal.

Rain and hail. Grmbl!!!!! Finished at 2300 under a tarp bulging with water puddles and lighting with a 500W halogen flood. Groan. I'm too old fer this shit.

Replaced all bearing. However Snapon 7/16 12-point socket started failing at 75-foot/lbs. Will need to go over them all again. Pressed damper on.

Checked all clearances. All still good. Last main cap a bit loose.

looks like you caught it before any real harm was done, did you get the high capacity baffled oil pan,you may as well get the oil pump pick-up correctly installed brazed so the pick-up can,t come loose and clearanced also and windage screen correctly installed and clearanced also?

QUIT COMPLAINING, YOU ARE JUST A YOUNG PUP.
Just wait until you get to be Grumpy's age. :D

BTW, I can't be blamed for anything I say after 2 beers, vodka, wine.......etc

Nice progress is going fast. Suck to be working outside and with rain OMG...
Am glad i buy a shop this year so i wont be doing this kind of (outside)stuff again  .

Nice picture, keep them comming :)

So far so good... Engine is back in there.... all that remains is to be done is bolt the exhaust collectors, connect vacuum lines, add oil and check timing + other level.

Discovery: the exhaust leak I had was related to the gasket. Although manufacture recommended, the are good for heads but too big for headers => leak!!!

I don't think this machine will be race worthy in time for next weekend...

BTW, I did check all the clearances including oil pick up: 0.383 inch

I have pics but stuck in a camera. Will take a couple of days to get them out.

The race is this weekend... pressure is building. I decided NOT to run the engine with these gaskets. I know there are a couple of gaps and exhaust ticks drive me NUTS!!!!!

I might take Thursday and Friday off to do this. Interestingly my son also has a Boy Scout camp (camporee) in same location: Bitburg, Germany.

A helping hand from Accenture

Hey all. Here I am waiting in line at tech inspection in Germany.

I must be insane. Thursday evening the engine had not yet run once. In fact there was an electrical bug I had to track down. Turns out it was only a loose coil wire. It was the next day, Friday, about 1000 when I figured that.

Thereafter I went for a short test drive... So far so good.

Went to a buddy's to slap on my drag radials. Cooked for the kids. Then in the evening drove 150 miles to Bitburg, Germany. Got there at 0020

Other than a Fxxxx annoying exhaust leak and some nasty rush hour traffic, it was a smooth ride. Oil pressure hot was 40 psi at 1200 rpm, 50 psi at 1800 rpm. This was stable the entire trip. Water temp was spot in too.

At this point I'm just amazed that I am crazy enough to drive this far on an engine that hadn't run yet just hours earlier.

Probably I won't push it at the track... It's already an achievement being here.

Will take video for you guys.

That is a great new.
OMG, driving this thing in rush hour traffic without much break-in/test driving, yes you are crazy :p
You have to go to inspection everyonce your changing/rebuilding the engine? I would have never told them since it was inspected like only a few month ago.

Your oil pressure reading sound exactly like mine :)
If it was mine id also keep it easy with engine/no track. I know i like to baby my engine alot but, its probably best to wait until the bearings are well broken-in/oil changed(500 miles i think?).
I have read (i forgot where but that was a guy talking about hes own experience) that usually if a brand new/rebuild engine is to broke usually that happen the first 100 miles.

I love video and picture.(too bad i dont own a quality camera)

Ive got to say I,M impressed ,car looks really nice, and I'm glad to see every things working out as far as maintaining cooling and steady oil pressure and flow rates, once you got the lubrication system
you've done a good job turning what might have turned into an expensive problem into a learning experience many people will benefit from , thru reading thru the thread.
(bearing clearances. bearings, oil pan etc set up everything's working correctly),
its almost always minor stuff like checking clearances or forgetting to check some components installed correctly that causes most problem, and failing to check into WHY your not getting expected oil pressure or an engines running rough or hot that causes big problems when easily cured issues cascade into huge problems when not corrected early, failure to check into why things are not running as expected usually is the root cause of most major problems because theres almost always small persistent indications well before major failures.
I'm glad to see the better bearings, checking the install and some minor tweaks seem to have corrected the situation before it became a rather costly collection of damaged components

When the hell are you going to grow-up??? Probably not anytime soon, I would guess! :D

Well....how did she do ???

Here are my time slips:

(Elevation: 1200 feet.)

Let me know if you cannot read it.

I missed last year's race, so I pretty much did not want to miss this year's as well. It was important for me to drive to Germany and get down the track a couple of times if not push it hard. That is why I braved the rush hour traffic on a hot day and drove 150 miles to Germany. This was the last race of the season.

Turns out, I could not resist, I pushed it hard down the track, but only twice.

The Tangerine Tornado did well. My best run, 12.325s @ 111mph, matched my best run from two years ago. It did this, without the benefit of a dyno (re)tune that I had back then.

Furthermore, I dropped my compression to 8.2, dialed back all-in advance to 34 degrees down from 36, water/meth not operational, shifting at 5200 rpm, and the carb was not retuned... the only difference was, my 325/50R15 drag radials that seem to have improved my 60-foot times from 2.2s to 1.98s.

I was told that I was leaving a cloud of black smoke down the track so, quite rich!

Right now I am glad that I have a new engine and stout trans and I can quietly work on the details.

Next year, I expect to break into the 11s.

In the meantime I will prep the rearend and get myself one of those infinitely adjustable jet plates for the carb.

I did suffer three failures: one exhaust gasket ;) , my ignition key won't come out of the cylinder :?: and an electric fan failure 3 miles from home... I still have to check what the latter is from.
