1965 Olds 425 V8 Hotrod Magazine November 1964

A few have reported Taking 1965 Starfire engines apart and finding .921" diameter lifters.
My 425 Delta 98 engine has conventional .842" diameter lifters.
Its real confusing data put out by Olds guys online.
.921" Starfire & Toranado 1965-67 Lifters are unobtainable today.
Last set I saw NOS GM on Ebay sold for $400 bucks set of 16.

The Starfire Camshaft Specs Advertised are just unusual Mike.
Running through my mind....
Olds Engineering packed more Dynamic Compression or Effective compression ratio in.
And it breathed heavier on Exhaust blowdown with higher Valvelift.
I don't think Powerband RPM was extended much over Delta 98 4-bbl.
Had Greater midrange Punch the Starfire.

No.
I checked back in 2011 Mike.
I Have Vintage Motor Manuals 1959- 79.
Along with Chiltons.
Not in my Factory GM Oldsmobile Service Manual likewise.

Pontiac published thier camshaft specs in GM Factory Servive Manuals.

My Delta 98 4-Bbl 10.25 :1 compression 425 I think has similar Camahaft specs comparable to Pontiacs 067 & 068.
Hard saying exact..

I cut the 1st K & N HP2003 Oil Filter apart today I used intial on the 425 Olds.
We have one if those Giant oil filter cutters at work we use occasional on Big Diesel oil Filters to look inside.

The K& N captured all crap.
No Metal.
The Resin impreginated filter media used in HP K&N is tough.
I could only poke through it with a Pocket knife.
Lesser filters I can poke my Finger through with my Finger Tip.

I also picked up my 3 quarts of Royal Purple 75-140W Gear Oil tonight after work.
My local Napa auto parts store had it on sale but not in stock yesterday .
Store transfer overnight for me.
Beat Summit Racing, Jegs, Autozone, O'Reilly Auto, & Advanced Auto by far $.

Nothing terrible exciting but Getting all ready for a Real Shakedown Run.
Foot on The Floor and Bury the Speedo past 120 mph.
There is No Stop pin on the Speedo in the '63 GP. None on my 70-1/2 TA either....160 & it goes past.

That should take about 10 seconds. Do it 6 times to kill a minute.:D

I drove my '63 Grand Prix for 48 miles today down the Interstate.
Open uncapped exhaust.
Did Great.
Changed out the 9.3 Rear Diff Gear oil with Royal Purple 75-140W.
Layed down a few Good patches of Twin Strip Rubber just hitting the gas.
Pictures coming.
You Tube Video too.

The Pontiac 9.3 Iron Hogs Head Drop out 3rd Member is Dated L-31-2.
December 31 1962.
The Large casted in 3 stands for 1963 model Year.
The Body Data Plate Tag on my Grand Prix says it was built the 1st week of 1963.
I have one of early Build 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix's.

I have a Better Driving Video that is 14 minutes long.
Having Trouble loading .
Will work on it.
Cracked 105 -110 mph just Goosing the Gas pedal Hammer real Light.
Never even opened the Holley 770 Cfm Vacuum Secondaries.

THIS 425 OLDS RUNS LIKE A BAT OUT OF HELL ON FIRE WOT.

Has Very Good Volumetric Efficiency .
Driven many LS & & LS VETTES.....POS .
425 much better !

Hows that pump work? I see it on Heartland for 23.00 with 10.00 off first order and free shipping.

It works Pretty Nice Birdman.
I looked on Ebay.... A few listed similar.
Looked On Amazon also.
Then Looked on You Tube...Decided to try it out.

I sucked out 12 year old Royal Purple 75-90W synthetic gear oil I put in back 2004.
Viscosity is similar to straight 40 weight Racing oil when cold.
I drove the '63 Pontiac down the highway & back for 20 miles.
Then changed the 9.3 Diff gear oil while still hot.
Fluid about 95-100F then.
About 50 F yesterday air temps.
The Pump was working hard but never overheated. I was done in under 10 minutes & the 12 vdc electric pump removed just over 5 pints gear oil.
The instructions say not to pump gear oil because to Viscous but I did anyhow.
Also not made for pumping gasoline.

I bought from my local independent Mom & Pops auto store for $24.99 without local sales tax.
Well worth every Penny.
Pretty well made.

Later that night I changed the oil on the Wifee's '99 Honda CRV AWD.
Pulled it up through the Dipstick tube.

The Pump is made for changing oil On Personal Water Craft boats.
Inboard 4.3 V6 GM, 350 sbc, 454 sbc, 455 Olds, Ect.

Not a POS.....I really like the Pump.
Going to use to change out the Power Steering Fluid On my 63 GP today.
Stuff in there has been in since 1998.
Pull the old fluid out with the reservoir cap off.

Its Raining out today Grumpy.
Blustery Cold.
Tech on your site is Active....Keeping me thinking.
Get on my Computer. I want to post some Data on 9.3 Pontiac - Olds .
Factory Gear Ratio charts.
Gears offered as low as 4.30 & 4.55 :1 by Pontiac in 1963.
Super Rare today to find intact all original .

Also the Ring and Pinion Gear Backlash is still Factory Tight new in my '63 G.P.
Its still .006" -.007" only.
I checked by turning the Rear wheels with, the TH 400 In Park.
Noted driveshaft movement.
Also rocked driveshaft clockwise & CCW.
Over 50 years old.
I abused 10,000 times prior at least.
Never failed.
Only A Dana 60 rear holds up similar .

I also have a '64 GP (since '86)- LSD was optional. Only code for it (other than on paperwork) would be a Saf-T-Track metal tag on one of the carrier bolts (in '63-64 at least, PMD put these at the 9 o'clock bolt). PMD also color-daubed one axle end, tho these must all be gone by now on unrestored cars.

'64 ratios:
2.56 (3)
2.69 (2)
2.87 (7)
3.08 (0)
3.23 (9)
3.42 (8)
3.64 (6)
3.90 (4)
4.10
4.30
4.55

'63 PMD shop manual shows axle codes were stamped in the boss next to the carrier bolt @ 8 o'clock (code numbers follow the ratios above). Code numbers are the same for open & LSD rears, but in addition to the different color codes, LSDs also get a green daub- I assume this refers to the axle ends again.
