1965 Olds 425 V8 Hotrod Magazine November 1964

The Engine and trans should bolt together but every aspect of Engine design is different so there might be some headaches switching Engine "family's"

Main thing is the oil pan, Nail heads and most Buick's up to to 1970 were normally center sump.

1971 and on were rear rear sump, and also I believe 1964 and newer A body Skylarks etc. were as well.

A nail head Skylark oil pan might be the answer if my post above is correct.

Then, once the engine mounts and exhaust manifolds are figured out, the rest should be doable.

Keep us posted!!

Thanks
Randy

Thanks Randy, This sounds like another job I'd rather stay away from. I'm just not into big projects anymore. Anything happens to me and these unfinished piles go for 0.10 on the dollar.
Simple or fast jobs are what I look for. Shops around here are too expensive and take too long. Their contracts are too "one sided" and you always loose trying to get away from a bad shop.

I cant say for sure Richard.
Pontiac 389-421 engines have very similar engine mount pads bolt spacing as Olds 1964-1987 engines.

Those contracts for jobs don't exist in the Street Race Drag Race World here in Illinois .
Very off Canter when you talk about & Grumpy too.
Contracts.
Immediately turns me off.
My word is Gold...or you dont get paid $$$ &$.
Death too.

Its my Day off of Work today.
I had to use my Olds 403 Water Pump & Crankshaft Pulleys.
All Accessory brackets are Olds 403.
Amazing all bolted up OK.
Oldsmobile setup similar accessory Mounting bosses from 1964-65 330 & 425 ci same exact till end of Olds V8 production in 1987.
Only Pontiac did similar with thier V8 engines.

I have a water pump gasket leak to fix.
Used the 1965-67 Olds 425 Fel Pro water pump gasket.
Needed the 1968-79 Olds V8 water pump gasket. I have it.
Using a NOS Remaned pump with Cast Iron Impellor.
AC Car for 1977-79 Olds 403.

Rebuild My Holley 770 Cfm Avenger 4-bbl Carb today.
I have a Brand New Holley Trick Kit rebuild kit.
Set my Vertex OAC Vintage Olds V8 Magneto in.
Fire it up.

I tested cranking oil pressure a few nights ago with a used HEI Olds V8 distributor in the 425 engine.
Had 40 psi.

The Oldsmobile 425 ci V8 water pump is obselete.
No longer available anywhere .
Researched Deep last night.
Flow cooler water pumps all for 1968-79 350, 400, 403 , & 455 engines.
So later Olds V8 accessory brackets are Gold.

2 different water pump heights Grumpy .
425 Olds V8 & 403 Olds V8.

The 1965 Olds 425 A engine I have last ran Easter Sunday 2011.
It was original from a 1965 Olds Delta 98 rated at 360 HP & 470 Ft/lbs. 4-bbl engine with a Holley square bore intake manifold.
It was installed in a Street Rat Rod style 1948 Chevy 2 door . The Guy swore it ran great & carried good oil pressure.
And he had no problem keeping up with any SBC, BBC, Ford Big Block, Mopar 440, & LS engine out there.
Said it had Super torque on tap at any road speed.
After pulling the spark plugs and seeing the nice tan burn on all 8 spark plugs I bought it on the spot.
I found on ebay, no one bid But I did.
He was only 60 miles from me in Chicagoland.

My plan was to rebuild it and I have all the parts.
But I need my 1963 GP to drive now.
So I dont tear my 1987 Corvette Roadster up.
My Suburban has a blown head gasket at least.....another project to fix soon.

So I am going on the sellers word....BELIEVE........!

CRANKING THE ENGINE IT HAS 40 PSI OIL PRESSURE.
IT HAS EVEN CRANKING COMPRESSION.
HAS VERY NICE COMPRESSION TURNING OVER BY HAND WITH A 1/2 INCH DRIVE SNAP ON RATCHET.
ITS TIGHT SEAL THE PISTON RINGS AND VERY LITTLE HISS INTO THE CRANKCASE.....ALMOST BRAND NEW FRESH REBUILD BEST TO DESCRIBE.

THE ENGINE IS ALL 1965, 51 YEARS OLD.
ONLY THE OIL PAN HAS BEEN OFF TO REPLACE THE PAN GASKET & INSTALL A NEW TIMING CHAIN SET THE LAST OWNER DID HIMSELF.

BEFORE STORAGE I FILLED ALL THE CYLINDERS UP WITH 10W30 CASTROL OIL.
KEPT IT NICE AND CYLINDERS FROM RUSTING UP.
DID THE TRICK.

The front timing cover steel plate had a stripped 1/4 threaded hole....so I pulled yesterday.
Took the one off my 403 Olds & cleaned up.
Wire wheeled it clean with my New Milwaukee M18 Fuel cordless angle grinder.
Spotless clean.
Then painted it 1963 Pontiac Super Duty Blue .
The engine I will retouch up....I painted back in 2011 & was stored in an unheated garage.

MY NEW OLDS STARFIRE EXHAUST MANIFOLDS CAME IN TODAY.
FUSICKS IN CONNECTICUT HAD THEM.
NOT FREE........COSTED $$$........BUT I NEEDED THEM.
MADE NICE TOO.

NO COOLANT LEAKS THIS TIME......BE COOL HEAVY DUTY STREET RACE RADIATOR & OLDS 425 ENGINE HOLDS 5- GALLONS OF COOLANT TOTAL.
A NEW MR GASKET HI FLOW T-STAT I INSTALLED....180F.
180F T-STAT LISTED IN MY 1965 GM OLDSMOBILE SERVICE MANUAL.
50/50 % PRESTONE ANTIFREEZE MIX.

10W30 CASTROL DINO OIL IN THE CRANKCASE. 5 QUARTS
K&N RACING OIL FILTER INSTALLED. HP 2003.
1 BOTTLE OF GM EOS IN THE CRANKCASE TOO.

GETTING THERE.
MAKE HER RUN AGAIN THIS SUNDAY !!!!!

ITS A PREMIUM CLOYES TRUE ROLLER TIMING CHAIN SET I INSTALLED.
THE RACING VERSION.
INSTALLED STRAIGHT UP.
NICE & TIGHT ON PULL & SLACK SIDE OF THE DOUBLE ROW CHAIN.
SPECIAL ORDERED FROM MY FAVORITE SPEED RACE SHOP IN JOLIET.

Why can't you just buy the bearing with seal and rebuild the water pump yourself? All you need is a decent sized press.

I already had a Fresh Rebuilt 403 Olds water pump Richard .
Rebuilt with a Factory cast iron impellor.
Ebay find back in 2012 for $22.99.

When I bought my 1965 Olds 425 V8 it was a Long Block with Heads, Block, intake manifold only.
It was missing he carburator, Exhaust manifolds, Unique 1965-67 425 water pump, accessory brackets, alternator & powersteering pump- also unique to 1965-67 Olds 425 cars, special factory Flexplate for Turbo 400 transmission.
Harmonic balancer was intact & also unique to 425's.

The Last owner had 2 425 olds V8's.
While he used my engine now,
He had another and slowly rebuilt it.
Then he pulled this engine and swapped over parts he needed.

Some items are Super Hard to find Today.
But I obtained them.

Its like trying to find parts for a 1963 Pontiac Super Duty 421 original factory installed.
Not easy today.

I am rebuilding my Pontiac V8 water pumps .
Next project.
Pontiac 455's of mine.
