Well, you had already seen them and nobody else is interested in this matter.

I doubt thats true, simply because Im the moderator on 6 different performance sites and one thing I can assure you without any reservation at all, is that probably 80% of the members on any site READ THE THREADS, probably use them as a reference, but seldom if EVER post to the board, I MOVED a chart showing valve spring pressure curves and a rough guide to calculating spring loads and I got 7 personal messages requesting I put it back, from members that never posted before.

you might not be getting a great deal of response but you are getting a good deal more readers than you might think,
Ive tried to save most related pictures but obviously I forget to do so in a timely manor in some threads

Re: Walde's L98

Cheers!

I reckon I need to get a steel bellhousing just in case.

If I go to Summit web page and start narrowing available bellhousings for an -86 I only get this McLeod 8650

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MCL-8650/

mcl-8630_w.jpg

And even that says:

Engine Swap No
Make CHEVROLET
Model CORVETTE
Beginning Year 1984
Ending Year 1990
Engine Type V8
Liter 5.7
CID 350
Engine Size 5.7L/350
Engine Family Chevy small block Gen I
Transmission Manual
Transmission Make GM
Transmission Type Borg Warner T-10
Clutch Engagement Mechanical
Application Notes No provision (bracket) for hydraulic clutch slave cylinder.

Erm...I've got zero experience with these. Will it fit my car and allow usage of my stock clutch mechanism?

Mine is with stock 4+3 but I might replace it with a Tremec TKO or T56 later.

The Summit 383 block #150100 was according to numbers a late 90's 4 bolt truck block. Would this (late 90's block in an -86) have any effect here or would this McLeod 8650 still fit?

No you know any other bellhousing as an alternative?

BR,
W

Re: Walde's L98

ID love to be able to give you the correct part number but even the year the transmission was built can at times effect what will fit, there are so many variations in blow proof bell housings, and transmissions, clutches, spline counts flywheels, etc, that you need to carefully verify with the manufacturer before purchasing , what part number WILL work with each PARTICULAR application, not only that, but part numbers have changed over the years as well Ive always started by listing the flywheel size (IE 153 or 168 tooth diam. on chevys) the engine family (SMALL BLOCK,BIG BLOCK,LS1 or W series) and then asked if the transmission and clutch required any special clutch fork, special length throw out bearing , hydraulic throw out bearing , or single or dual disc clutch or restrictions in use?

Re: Walde's L98

Thanks, G-man, for the info.

This is now a matter I need to focus on in detail. I just noticed that the Lakewood bellhousing I have for my -78 may be wrong one ie. for Ford TKO. If that is the case I really would not want to do twice.

Re: Walde's L98

Re: wheels

On my -86 with Z51 suspension the wheel size front and rear is 16x9.5 with 38 mm offset. Tyresize is stock 255/50-16. Base model had 16x8.5 wheels with 32 mm offset and same tires.

There are not so many wheels available with 5x4 3/4" (5x120.65 mm) bolt circle but with BMW bolt circle 5x120.00 mm there are plenty. The 38 mm offset is used on the 3-series BMW.

1. Would it matter much to use 5x120.00 mm wheel on the Vette? It's just a 0.65 mm difference in diameter - I know that it's not the same but would it matter in real world?

2. My stock wheels are 9.5" wide. BMW wheels do not have many 9.5" wheels available in 17" or 18" wheels but there are many available with 8.5" width. Would these narrower 17 or 18x8.5" wheels with 32 mm offset fit OK? I would need to adjust the tiresize accordingly but I'm thinking about the wheels only at this point.

These would really look fine under my -86. Yummy!

Re: Walde's L98

I cant see that single dimensional difference being a huge obstacle, to using that wheel but remember the inner diam. of the rim seats on the axle flange lip, and that might be a big problem, Id call and talk to the manufacturer about that before buying the rims

Re: Walde's L98

Yep, need to be careful with all of the details so not to lose a lot of money.

Compomotive MVS1885, anyone?

Re: Walde's L98

Today on December 6th is Finland's 94th Independence Day.

There's this poem that former President Kekkonen used to read on his New Year's TV speech in the seventies. It's called "Finn" and it's been written by Jorma Etto. Humble English translation by yours truly.

Finn by Jorma Etto

A Finn is of a kind who answers when he is not asked,
asks when he is not answered, does not answer when he is asked.

Of a kind who gets lost, howls on the shore and on the opposite shore howls another of the same kind.

Forest peals, echoes, the pine trees hum.

There comes a Finn and groans, is here and groans, goes there and groans - is as in the sauna and groans when another throws water on the sauna stones.

Such a Finn always has a partner, never is he alone, and that partner is another Finn.

And nothing separates a Finn from another Finn. Nothing. Except the Death. And the Police.

And now for something completely different:

And-now-for-something-completely-different.jpg

Being too lazy to work on the C4 I figured it's time to finally start the 427 SBC after it's been sitting three years in the garage waiting for the -78 SA (in bits and pieces, naturally) to be completed.

22282319.jpg

We changed the cheapo damper for ATI Super Damper and the stockish Milodon oilpan for Canton 7 qt pan.

Engine is Shafiroff Ultrastreet SBC 427 built around Dart SHP block filled with Mahle, Eagle, Melling, Comp Cams etc. Manifold is RPM Airgap with Quick Fuel 825 cfm carb.

"You mean that's it?" "I'm too tired, I'm an old man." Ending words of the --> Finnish cover of Chuck Berry's Reelin' and Rockin'.

Re: Walde's L98

Very nice engine, you need to get motivated......don't you want to use your right foot to control that monster!!!

Since I'm building a 401 cu in with the Dart SHP block, I'm wondering what the specs are for your camshaft? Will you be using an automatic or standard trans? Rear gear ratio? Anything else you want to tell us about the engine?

Re: Walde's L98

Thanks. All credit goes to Scott Shafiroff & co.

Forgot to mention that the heads are AFR 210 with 75 cc chambers.

Pull in the video was run with Hooker Super Comp 1 3/4" headers, 3" collectors. We ran the initial pull with 1 5/8" headers and what's really peculiar IMHO is that max power was just 1 hp down ie. 542. TQ was a little lower but now much.

These runs were done just out of curiosity as I wanted to see how much the figures differ from what was produced in the Shafiroff shop. We were within a horse or two - which is nice.

The C3 will have a Tremec TKO600RR + 3.55 ratio. Should be fun.

Re: Walde's L98

Hey Indy.

I'm beginning to think that I just like projects - driving is not that important. :D

The build sheet is pretty much this with some minor options:

http://www.ultrastreet.net/engines/427_realstreet.asp

The cam is a Comp Cams hydraulic roller with Shafiroff's specs with around 230/236 degrees@.050". I have the cam spec sheet at work. I'll post the details tomorrow.

Re: Walde's L98

I'm just curious, don't worry about it if it's much trouble. I've already picked my camshaft (Crower 00471), so it would be just for comparison purposes.

Details on my Shafiroff spec Comp Cams hydraulic roller, I understood. Which I have unfortunately misplaced - I will find the cam card tomorrow.
